It is still possible this is our Jesse Kirby Smith because the Civil War made poor folks out of quite a few rich people. On this 1850 Census, Elam Alexander has personal property valued at $10,000 and who's occupation is "Prest M S Line." He had just bought stock in Samuel Morse's recently invented telegraph and established a line (telegraph company) from Savannah to Macon.
