Mar 10, 2019 Here's a list of the file's contents: pages 1 & 2: the "paper by Willie Jackson" listing Aunt Ellen's brothers and sisters (Jesse Kirby Smith's children). Also the family legend of Jesse Kirby Smith and his wife, Fannie. The "Cousin Pearl" mentioned is Pearl Blake McCloud (1896-1980) who was the 2nd oldest daughter of Lillie Viola Smith and J.B. Blake. Lillie was the 8th child of Jesse Kirby Smith and Fannie Fulmer. page 3: Certified copy of Aunt Ellen's marriage to James A. Findley. page 4: Plot deed for the gravesite purchased by James A. Findley where his wife, Ellen, was buried. page 5: Delayed Birth Certificate for Willie Findley, 5th child of James and Ellen Smith Findley. page 6: Old photo of Willie Findley and her husband, Ira Jackson. page 7: Photo of Ellen Smith Findley. page 8: Photo of Ellen Smith Findley with her brother (according to Sandra Jackson) Joe Smith. I suspect this is actually a photo of her with Joseph Leroy Livingston whose birth surname was Smith. He was younger than Aunt Ellen and didn't know who his relatives were. From what little I can find on him, I suspect he's the person called "Joe Smith." There's a transcript of Joseph Smith Livingston's Alabama Death Record at FamilySearch.org. Here's the transcript: Joseph Smith Livingston Alabama Deaths, 1908-1974 Name: Joseph Smith Livingston Event Date: 05 Jan 1955 Event Place: Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama Gender: Male Age (Original): 83y Birth Year (Estimated): 1872 Father's Name: Jessie E. Smith Mother's Name: Fannie Fulmer This is the only record I know of besides Jesse's marriage record that shows his name was Jesse "E" Smith. This confirms the middle initial on his marriage record is confirmed by another record. Now I wonder if he didn't make up his middle name "Kirby" to cover his knee injury. It's an often repeated story in the family that he was a famous civil war general (which he most certainly was NOT). There was a General Kirby Smith. Our Jesse Smith must have known that. I wonder if he took the name "Kirby" to compare himself with that famous man? None of his children would have ever known the truth.
