Carmen Vincent Pesnell was Peggy Bigby and Rick Vincent's oldest child, my parents' first grandchild, and my father's first "daughter." He and mother had always wanted a daughter. When Carme was a baby, she could pronounce "grandmother" so she learned to call my mother, "Gana." The rest of mother's grandchildren picked this up and she became "Gana" forever after. She loved to cook for her family and she was quite a cook. Everyone loved her cooking and came to her house often hoping for some of that delicious home cooked food that seemed only she could make. Actually, she told me she learned how to cook from my father's mother which is the way a lot of dedicated wives learn. It's how my wife, Susie, learned which is why she was able to replicate some of my mother's delicious food. My wife, Linda, learned from many of the same age-old recipes and cooks food so much like my mother it's uncanny. What was so special about my mom's recipes? Sometimes it was some "secret ingredient" like adding a bit of ketchup to a stew. However, most often it was probably the fact that she was OCD -- obsessive compulsive. She was an absolute perfectionist sometimes, like when she washed her turnip green seven times and carefully looked over each leaf before cooking. Mother was "famous" for some of her recipes. Sadly, some have been lost. No one remembers or knows how she made "ghoulash" (Chili-Mac). It was unlike any other. Fortunately, however, my daughter Sarah kept after, her begging her to write some of them down until she finally gave us a little recipe book. Here are the recipes from that book, both images of my mom's own handwriting and text versions that you can follow more easily.
